Thousands attend first-ever psychedelic shroom festival in Ann Arbor

Attendees gather on the Diag during Entheofest in Ann Arbor on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021.

ANN ARBOR, MI — Thousands of people, young and old alike, gathered on the University of Michigan Diag for Ann Arbor’s first-ever psychedelic shroom festival Sunday.

They came from across Michigan and as far away as California for Entheofest, a celebration of entheogenic plants and fungi featuring live music and speeches Sept. 19.

Some attendees mingled about, wearing mushroom-themed attire, and T-shirts boasted messages such as “Make America Giggle Again” and “The Future is Dope.”

Some blew bubbles, danced and grooved to the rhythmic drumming on stage. Feeling inspired, one man took off his shirt and shoes and laid down on the block M in the center of the Diag, slapping his face and the ground to the beat.

University of Michigan police stood watch over the event, which appeared to take place without any major incidents. UM police have not confirmed whether any arrests were made.

The three-hour event celebrated the one-year anniversary of Ann Arbor’s move to declare entheogenic plants and fungi the city’s lowest law-enforcement priority, effectively decriminalizing them at the city level. That includes ayahuasca, ibogaine, mescaline, peyote, psilocybin mushrooms and other natural compounds with hallucinogenic properties.

Several elected officials joined psychedelic activists Sunday in rallying the crowd to get behind efforts to decriminalize the substances throughout Michigan and to sign petitions in support of Senate Bill 631, which aims to do so.
